Daniel & Wesley – Brisbane Powerhouse/Electric Avenue

Newlyweds: Daniel & Wesley
Wedding date: 1st of March 2020

We met on Tinder of all places but kept it to chats for a little while. Finally the opportunity came for us to grab a beer on NYE 2014 and we locked eyes and it was instant attraction. We weirdly sensibly agreed to date for a couple of months – meet each others folks (his were contestants on MKR at the time and I was star struck) – just see how it all went and that if by March 1st we wanted to either make it official or walk away. Not dramatic at all haha. I was on the loo scrolling Facebook as you do and bingo, this man I was 100% falling in love with sent me a relationship request. So damn happy. He moved in with me after a year, proposed to me on the anniversary of the marriage equality vote, and we married on our fifth anniversary. We are very different but almost never fight. We talk things through, always be kind and both of us firmly believe a few good laughs can solve anything.

Our big vision and grand ideas?

It wasn’t as important to Wes so it was really about my vision and then checking in that he was comfortable. The overall goal was an elegant ceremony with emotion and a bit of wow factor. We envisioned the reception being like a big house party with different areas to dance, drink, relax back and chill – to have everyone comfortable and not feel corralled into things they didn’t want to do. We wanted to make sure we checked in with each other throughout the night but basically work the room and have fun. We definitely achieved that.

we found the one!

We always loved the Powerhouse for its epic atmosphere, different spaces, exposed brick, artwork, graffiti and completely diverse ethos. The venue celebrates life in our book. Due to the timing of the Brisbane Comedy Festival we had to look for a separate reception. That’s when we found Electric Avenue – a quirky, two-storey gastropub slash whiskey speakeasy that had a “house party” vibe with lots of areas to explore but not isolating. Best combo of venues we could ask for.

the best bits?

Our final song was a group singalong to I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston with a confetti cannon on the final big note. It was amazing. Little things like that were so impactful and special.
